Veterans Receive Scholarships for Criminal Justice Training

On August 23, 2013 Kevin Childe awarded Joshua Taisor and Ramon Sanchez the Returning Combat Veteran Scholarship to help pay for the cost of attending the GWC Police Academy. These two recipients are both fathers who are supporting their families while attending the 6-month academy requiring all their time and energy.

There are actually 9 veterans in the current class, 7 of which have been hired and are being paid. Although Taisor and Sanchez have applied for police positions, they have yet to be hired or paid.

When selecting the recipients of the Scholarship, the committee takes into account their performance in the Police Academy and their ability to be hired at the conclusion of the training. An interview is conducted of eligible veterans to include their military service record and their current financial needs to complete the police Academy. The training staff also provides input along with the Senior Recruit Training Officer.

There have been approximately 25  Returning Combat Veteran scholarships awarded in the last 5 years.
