GWC Students Awarded Top AGS Scholarships

On Saturday, April 17, Monica Dekany and Sumair Devani were each awarded top scholarships by Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the Academic Honor Society of the California Community Colleges. The awards were presented at the 84th annual AGS convention in San José, California with over 400 students and advisors in attendance.

Ms. Dekany was one of only four outstanding students statewide who received the Charles Bell Service Award in the amount of $900.  Mr. Devani, an international student from Pakistan, was one of only four outstanding students statewide to receive the Robert Mantovani Award ($1200) for excellence in scholarship, service and leadership. Alpha Gamma Sigma awards scholarships to students who excel in academics and/or community service. Each college AGS chapter may nominate up to three of their top students for these prestigious awards. Each student submits a personal essay, letters of recommendation, academic transcripts and documentation of their service to the organization, the campus, and the community. This year, the state AGS organization awarded $36,800 in scholarships to 44 outstanding community college students.
