It may have taken five decades, but the Rustler Football team was welcomed with open arms at its first on-campus home game in the 50-year history of the school. Under the watchful eyes of a packed crowd, the game ended with a nail-biting 35-23 Southern Conference victory over Palomar. Kicking off the festivities was a tailgate party featuring inflatables, carnival games, GWC swag and food trucks. Everyone in attendance received a 50th Anniversary commemorative stadium cushion. The highlight of the day was the appearance of some of the founding members of the 1966 Rustler football team, nicknamed the “Junction Boys” and coach Ray Shackelford, GWC’s reigning football coach from 1966-1997. This week’s “Battle of the Bell” game is a much-anticipated match against rival team Orange Coast College.
