Chefs for Scholarships was no Picnic

On Sunday, September 18, 2011, over 650 guests attended the Patrons 6th Annual Chefs for Scholarships event, held in the GWC Student Center and surrounding grounds. The park-like setting was truly a family festival of food and fun. But it was no picnic. The food and beverages provided by 32 local restaurants, wineries and breweries was far beyond typical picnic food. From soup to desserts, guests were treated to an array of delicious gourmet tastes and specialty sips.

Guests were entertained by the Gerry Schroeder Jazz Four featuring Tom Kubis and the Swing Kittens, and a game squad truck and a clown were brought in to entertain the kids.

This year the Patrons dedicated the event to veterans and invited student veterans to attend as their guests. In addition to the 17 scholarships the organization currently funds, the Patrons have recently added four student veteran scholarships.

Patrons President June Dugmore presented the Golden Chef Award to David Salai, a veteran and last year’s ASGWC President. This award was established to honor a former GWC student who is continuing their studies at a 4-year college or university and has engaged in  philanthropic efforts in support of students at Golden West College. David is currently attending UCLA.

This year’s event broke all fund-raising records for the Patrons in both attendance and funds raised. The Patrons, the College and the students are grateful to all of the sponsors, participants, volunteers and guests who contributed to the success of this yummy event.
