Chefs for Scholarships – Deliciously Successful!

The Patrons of Golden West College held their 5th annual Chefs for Scholarships, an event to raise money for student scholarships, on Sunday, September 19 on campus at the GWC Student Center patio.  This event was a 5-Star success!!  The donations were up 36% from last year’s numbers and attendance was over 500.  The big winners were the Golden West College students.  This event funds four major scholarships and an additional 12 scholarships to incoming high school students.

This family-friendly event offered something for everyone including outstanding sample dining, wine and beer tasting.   In addition to the food, there were opportunity drawings, silent auctions as well as live music. For the kids, there was face painting, a clown, the The Game Squad’s video game limousine and an appearance from “JoJo the Crab” and 6 disco-dancing waiters, compliments of Joe’s Crab Shack.

For the second year, the Golden Chefs Award was given to a GWC alumnus. This award was established to honor a former Golden West College student who is continuing their studies at a 4-year college or university and has engaged in philanthropic efforts in support of students at Golden West College. Heather Walters, this year’s recipient, was given the $500 check. After graduating from Golden West, Heather went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California and is currently in her final year at Southwestern Law School.  Heather is an active member of the campus community, continuing her involvement as a member of the Patrons.  She and her husband James, also a GWC alumnus, were married in the GWC amphitheater in 2006 and have two children.

Wes Bryan, President of Golden West College said, “This is a win-win event for everyone—it’s great exposure for the restaurants, it gives the community an opportunity to visit the campus, and it raises funds for student scholarships.  It is an event the whole family will enjoy.  Congratulations to the Patrons on this successful event!”
