On September 24, celebrated the International Day of Peace by unveiling a Peace Pole during its Peace Day celebration.
Every year, there is an International Day of Peace held throughout the world. The United Nations recognized and established this special day in 1981 with a mission to honor peace and to raise involvement in creating a peaceful culture on Earth.
The Peace Studies Program, Intercultural Program, and Peace & Leadership Club hosted the celebration by unveiling a Peace Pole in the campus quad. Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and even children from the day care center attended the dedication.
After a peace march around the quad the Peace Pole was unveiled with a short ceremony, which included a Native American blessing, and a speech by Janet Houlihan, Vice President of Student Life and Administrative Services.
Humanitarian and active organizations that work towards establishing peace, sustainability and diversity, were invited to bring awareness and activism to the campus by setting up booths to share information about their cause..
About the Peace Pole
The Peace Pole Project is the official Project of The World Peace Prayer Society. It started in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi, who decided to dedicate his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in response to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Peace Poles are handcrafted monuments erected the world over as international symbols of Peace. Their purpose is to spread the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the languages of the world.
