Over 1,400 middle school students and their families attended the 4th Annual Science Showtime at Golden West College on September 27.
Science Showtime was established in 2010 as a joint effort by the Rotary Club of Huntington Beach and the GWC Science department to inspire kids to take an early interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). If the steady increase in the event’s attendance is an indicator, then the effort has been a success.
Activities were spread out over a large area on campus, in Math/Science classrooms, the Student Center and patio, and various outdoor areas. GWC faculty, students and community volunteers provided a variety of activities in the science labs, such as, making slime, collecting DNA, learning how to test blood, and touching a human skeleton.
Outside, a frisbee throwing robot demonstration and launching rockets were big hits. The Student Center housed hands-on exhibits by local businesses and organizations. Participants identified counterfeit money, built towers with marshmallows and spaghetti, rode a bike to generate electricity, tested natural gas safety, and much more.
The support of the business community helped to make the event possible. Sponsors included AES, Beef Palace, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Southern California Edison, Sempra Energy utility, Rainbow Disposal, Poseidon Resources, and The Gas Company.
