On Friday, September 30, 2011 Golden West College teamed up with the Rotary Club of Huntington Beach to offer an evening of hands-on science for school children in our local area. Hundreds of families enjoyed over 30 exhibits and science activities in the physical and life sciences. The event was spread out over a large area on campus, in 19 Math/Science classrooms, the Student Center and patio, and various outdoor areas.
This is the second year that Science Showtime was held at Golden West. It all started when members of the Rotary approached the GWC Science Department with an idea to have an event to try and get 5th and 6th graders more excited about science. A partnership was formed, and the result has been highly successful.
If the purpose of the event is to get kids excited about science, it was certainly a success. Some of the favorite activities were making slime and worms in the chemistry labs, building and launching rockets with real rocket scientist volunteers from Boeing, and learning the principles of physics by riding in a fire truck lift. A hot dog BBQ dinner was provided by the Rotarians.
The business community came together to help make the event a success. Sponsors included Farmers & Merchants Bank, Southern California Edison, Sempra Enery utility, Beef Palace, FreshPoint, Rainbow Disposal, Poseidon Resources, One West Bank, The Gas Company, and Surf City Bank.
