On Saturday, October 29 Nika Moore and Freddy Vega were named Homecoming Queen and King during the football game’s half-time ceremony.
This year’s Homecoming theme was GWC in Wonderland and the Court was escorted to the 50 yard line by Alice in Wonderland characters from the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Valley, Kingston Branch.
Queen Nika Moore was clearly surprised when her name was announced. But, it was no surprise to those who have heard her sing at many campus events.
When Nika began her college journey at Golden West College she immediately jumped at the opportunity to become involved on campus by accepting an internship in the Intercultural Program Office. She co-founded GWC’s first LGBT organization and has worked for the past year with the GWC Rock Band, now called Future Entertainers. She is a Film major, avid photographer, screenwriter, actress, director, singer and musician. She spends her free time working on student film projects and uses cooking as her way to achieve a state of Zen.
King Freddy Vega, a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, is a 3rd year student working towards his AA in Sign Language and a Certificate in Interpreting. He plans to transfer to CSU San Diego or CSU Northridge to continue his education. Freddy is a member of several clubs on campus, including the Student Veterans Organization, GLASA, AGS, and Mi Casa. And if that’s not enough, he works full-time as a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines. In his free time he enjoys Latin dancing, traveling, and hanging with friends.
The Homecoming Court process started with elections held on campus from October 11th through the 13th. Twelve students ran in the elections and the top five candidates in each category were named the Homecoming Court. On October 24, the court presented themselves before a panel of judges who rated them in several categories and the queen and king were determined by the highest overall scores by the judges.
The finalists, who will now serve as princesses, are Graciela Becerra, Judy Lopez, Christy Nguyen, and Bella Tran. The princes are Jona Nguyen, Dale Lendrum, Matthew Turnbeaugh, and Ruben Muñoz.
Oh, and by the way, GWC won the game 35-10!!!
Congratulations to each of the candidates.
