Christopher DeLuco is this year’s winner of the prestigious R. Dudley Boyce Outstanding Student Award. Christopher was honored for his exemplary leadership and service to the campus.
Christopher was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York before relocating to Clearwater, Florida with his mother for his high school years. At 16, Christopher moved with his sister to Los Angeles where he continued his schooling online.
Lacking maturity and focus, this transition was not an easy one. Thanks to his sister’s encouragement, he passed his high school equivalency test and applied to Golden West College in the spring of 2014.
Initially looking for guidance and community, Christopher joined the Associated Students of Golden West College (ASGWC) Activities Committee as a delegate his first year. He has held multiple positions since then including Activities Commissioner, Finance Commissioner, Vice President of Club Affairs and Student Advocacy, and Executive Vice President. Christopher is also a member of two clubs on campus, the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society and the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.). He served as vice president of the C.E.R.T. club this past semester. Both clubs gave Christopher a chance to volunteer in the community, which he very much enjoyed.
With his extensive involvement in student government, Christopher has discovered a passion for higher education and making a difference on campus. DeLuco found that working alongside administration and faculty to help students succeed has been very satisfying. His goal for the future is to increase equity amongst students, increase student involvement on campus issues and strengthen collaboration between administration and students.
Christopher says, “The time I have spent at Golden West College included leadership, vast opportunity, and inspiring individuals. As I continue to assume leadership roles in the future, I will use the skills I have learned here to positively influence the next generation of students. I owe all my gratitude to Golden West College and the opportunities it has opened up for me. One day I hope to spread the wealth.”
Christopher will be attending California State University Fullerton in the fall, majoring in Business Administration.
