The Charlie Sianez Exceptional Service Award is awarded annually to a GWC employee who has exhibited exceptional service to the college or the community. This year’s recipient is Gail Call, Associate Professor, Floral Design.
Year after year, Gail extends her talents as a masterful florist to this campus by creating beautiful arrangements for our events, which include the Gala, Courtyard of Honor, the President’s Holiday Open House, and, of course, the Staff & Faculty Appreciation Breakfast. Gail spends many hours of her own time designing and preparing these arrangements.
She is actively involved in the floral industry where she volunteers her time and expertise in projects such as the Bixby Mansion Historical Residence, the Orange County Fair, events for the California Floral Association and the American Institute of Floral Designers, and many other local vendor activities. She also helped to develop the California Certified Florist Program.
Gail is a role model for her students, who join her to volunteer and gain hands-on experience. She puts her students first, always supporting their education and employment goals.
The recipient of this award is chosen by the President with the recommendation of a task force. Nominations are solicited campus wide and rated by the committee based on the following criteria.
- must be a current permanent or part time faculty, manager, or classified staff member
- have made either a single outstanding service contribution or outstanding service to the college, students, staff members, or the community over a period of time.
- exemplify exceptional attitude
- exhibit enthusiasm for his/her job
- treat everyone with equal respect
- set desirable standards of reliability
The award was establshed in 2006 by President Bryan in memory of Charlie Sianez, a valued member of the Maintenance and Operations department for 20 years. Charlie exemplified excellent service to the college. He passed away unexpectedly in January 2006.
