On March 7, 2012, Golden West College hosted its annual College Preview Day for high school seniors from 15 feeder schools. Students started their day in the Mainstage Theater with a presentation about the college, followed by a lively event of college information booths, department tours, music, food, prizes, and a free t-shirt for everyone.
Campus participation was the best in years for this important event. Tables and booths representing GWC programs and services, student clubs, a radio station and live band lined “main street” from the Central Quad to the Gym, creating an energetic street fair atmosphere. Vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, Endless Food and Fun, and Sea World added to the excitement.
This year for the first time, students were given a passport card and were told to get it stamped by 10 booths and take at least one tour to be eligible for great prizes including an iPad3, XBOX360, and Kindle Fire. The grand prize was a $600 scholarship with a $100 gift card to the bookstore. In addition, over 50 lucky students walked away as instant winners of gift cards (all donated).
The Grand Prize Scholarship was donated by the Golden West College Patrons and June Dugmore, Patrons President drew the winning ticket. Sarah Brayton from Pacifica High School (and her mother) were thrilled when they got the call that she won.
The best feedback was from a high school counselor who wrote, “I had one kid tell me that because of the tour to the Design Program he thinks he has found his major.” And that’s what it’s all about.
Thanks to everyone who contributed in making this a great event!
