Calling all Golden West College students, artists, and inspired faculty/staff

The GWC STEM Center is looking for a new visual identity and needs your help. We are seeking current GWC students who can design a creative, innovative and professional logo design. The logo should be recognizable and help promote the STEM Center vision, mission, and values. The rest is up to you!  Please read below for more details regarding logo design, contest rules & submission requirements.

Official Rules

The purpose of the contest is to design a logo for the GWC STEM Center. The logo may be used in all media – including online, print, on merchandise and other visual collateral.

Following are the official contest rules:

  • To be eligible, each entrant must be a currently registered GWC student (individuals or teams of up to two students) or a faculty with a teaching assignment at GWC.
  • Individuals or teams may submit no more than two entries (a separate Entry Form must accompany each submission).
  • All submitted work must be the original work of the entrant(s) and must not include, be based on, or derived from any pre-existing or third-party designs, trademarks, or copyrighted images.
  • All entries will become the property of the GWC STEM Center. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees that any and all intellectual property rights in the logo design are deemed assigned to the GWC STEM Center.
  • Except where prohibited by law, an entry submission into this contest constitutes permission to use the winner’s name, likeness, prize information, and information provided on the entry form for publicity purposes, without further permission or compensation.
  • The GWC STEM Center reserves the right to modify the winning logo to better fit the needs of the STEM Center.
  • The selected winner MUST submit a scalable vector version of the winning design so that it is adaptable to electronic and print media, to reproduction on small and large surfaces, and to use in color or in grayscale.
  • The decisions of the Selection Committee will be final.

How to Enter

To enter the GWC STEM Center Logo Design Contest, eligible participants must:

  • Complete the Official Entry Form.
  • Create a logo design in .jpeg or PDF formats (if you are chosen as a winner, you MUST be able to provide a high resolution vector file (e.g., in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign).
  • A written description of the symbolism behind your logo design.
  • Submit to by Friday, December 20, 2019.

Technical Details

  • The design must be original and not edited before.
  • The technique used can be free: drawing, painting, computer design, photography, all adaptable to printing.
  • The dimension of the logo will be the maximum 12×12 inches, which does not imply that it should be a square shape.
  • The final design having been done on the computer, the electronic version must be presented in addition.
  • The logo may include the words “Science, Technology, Engineering, Math/Mathematics” or the acronym “STEM”.
  • The proposal will be accompanied by a brief explanation in English of the design and the main ideas represented.

Selection Criteria

A Selection Committee comprised of a faculty from each of the Core GWC STEM Disciplines (Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology) and a STEM Center representative will evaluate all entries based on the following criteria (though other criteria may be considered):

  • Relevance – Does the entry align with the theme and goals of the GWC STEM Center?
  • Originality – Does the composition exhibit original design, creativity, and imagination?
  • Aesthetic Quality – Does the submission command attention? Does it display visual balance and color coordination? Do all the elements work together to create a unified and appealing design?


The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to the GWC Bookstore (and bragging rights!). If the winning design is produced by a team of students, the STEM Center will award one prize of $100 (divided equally among the team). The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select a winner, if in its sole discretion, no suitable entries are received.
